TRG | The Bottom Line – 1/14
U-Haul once again released its annual migration data as tracked by “One-Way” U-Haul truck transactions, and themes from 2020 carried strongly into 2021. Texas was the number one destination for internal migration, topping Florida and Tennessee and regaining the top spot it previously held in 2016-2018. The top 3 states remained the same from 2020 to 2021, with more movement in the 3-10 spots. SC, AZ, IN, CO, ME, ID, and NM round out the top 10 states for 2021 growth as movers target the Southeast, Southwest and Rocky Mountain regions. California ranks last again by a wide margin and has ranked 48th or lower since 2016. According to U-Haul data, California remained the top state for out-migration, although not as severe as 2020. That said, this trend may be partially attributed to the fact that U-Haul simply ran out of inventory to meet customer demand for outbound equipment! Illinois has been 49th or 50th since 2015, when U-Haul began ranking states based on annual net gain.
